Along the banks of the river Indus, just nine kilometres from Leh, and set within forty two acres of a nature sanctuary is the Indus River Camp. With only monasteries perched on the surrounding Himalayan Mountains as your neighbours, the Indus River Camp offers fantastic accommodation and service amidst a stunning and peaceful setting. Run by an English/Indian couple, the camp has cottages and cabins as well as a Family Suite, all overlooking the Indus River and Shey Palace and featuring luxury mattresses, thick Rajasthani quilts and beautifully finished en suite bathrooms with hot water showers. Within the camp, take a dip in the river, read in the library or eat in the restaurant (the food here is a huge highlight) before watching the Milky Way beside a warm fire. Fill your days with a multitude of activities on offer in the area; whether you’re trekking to a nearby monastery, motor biking to the Nubra Valley, white water rafting down the Indus river to camp, hiking to Stok Kongri, learning about the two hundred local bird species on a nature tour, experiencing a cooking class with a local Ladakhi household, seeing the impressive sand dunes of Nubra or visiting the double humped camel conservation centre. The Indus River Camp is also very focused on responsible and sustainable tourism practices and is owned by the Indus Welfare Society, a local organisation of Buddhist villagers from the village of Chuchot Yokma, 3 of whom fashioned the camp as it is today. The property makes efforts to keep harmony with the wildlife on the land, and avoids single-use plastic wherever possible.
