A self-drive adventure through the vast landscapes of Namibia provides a chance to take in some of the most diverse and dramatic settings anywhere on the African continent. From dramatic sand dunes to coastal cities and vast salt pans, you are your own safari guide as you journey through Namibia sighting superb wildlife along the way.
After a night spent in the country’s engaging capital, you’ll journey through the haunting landscapes of the Namib Desert, where you can climb to the top of the towering dunes of Sossusvlei. Then, it is on to Swakopmund and the Atlantic Coast, where a range of activities await including nature walks and a cruise through the waters of Sandwich Harbour.
Continuing into the barren landscapes of Damaraland and Twyfelfontein, you’ll then have the opportunity to visit ancient rock art and spend some time searching out Namibia’s remarkable desert-adapted wildlife, before reaching the game-rich salt pans of Etosha, the country’s premier game reserve. The journey back to Windhoek then concludes with a stay at the Elegant Farmstead ranch where wildlife run freely, providing the perfect way to round off this unforgettable Namibian self-drive adventure.

Day 1 ARRIVE WINDHOEK
Arriving in Windhoek today you will be met at the airport and transferred on to your overnight guesthouse for a chance to relax from the overnight flight and prepare yourself for the adventure ahead.
Day 2 WINDHOEK - SOSSUSVLEI
After taking delivery of your rental car at the hotel this morning, you will then set off heading west towards the surreal landscapes of Sossusvlei. Travelling through the scenic Khomashochland Hills and over the Spreetshoogte Pass, the landscape changes dramatically as you leave the rolling farmland behind and enter the arid red sands of the Namib Desert. Arriving this afternoon affords plenty of opportunity to freshen up and relax before an al fresco dinner beneath the stars.
Day 3 EXPLORE SOSSUSVLEI
An early start and a quick bite this morning provides the chance to reach Sossusvlei in time to enjoy a breathtaking sunrise across the towering dunes. Though strenuous, the walk to the top of the dunes provides some stunning views out to the surrounding desert. And after getting those postcard pictures, you will return to the lodge to enjoy a hearty breakfast a bit of rest after your early morning.
Day 4 SOSSUSVLEI - SWAKOPMUND
Another early start sees you setting off along the Namibian coast this morning towards the delightful town of Swakopmund and the waters of Walvis Bay. Arriving in time for lunch, you should have ample time this afternoon to explore a little of this quaint German town with its unique mix of Bavarian charm and African colour.
Day 5 EXPLORE SWAKOPMUND
Swakopmund provides a choice of exciting activities today including a chance to join a full day catamaran cruise through the waters of Sandwich Harbour. Here, against the stunning backdrop of the dunes of the Namib Naukluft National Park which stretch right down to the shores of the bay, you can look out for seals, flamingos and dolphins. Later you will be able to make the most of Swakopmund's rich culinary heritage with dinner at one of the town's excellent restaurants.
Day 6 SWAKOPMUND - TWYFELFONTEIN
Departing early from Swakopmund you'll journey through the Brandberg Mountains and along the dramatic Atlantic Coast this morning towards the startling landscapes of Twyfelfontein. The drive should get you to the lodge in time for a late lunch and a chance to spend the afternoon enjoying the delights of the camp and the stark panoramas for which this region is famed.
Day 7 EXPLORE TWYFELFONTEIN
Dating back over 2,000 years, Twyfelfontein (Doubtful Fountain), is home to one of the richest collections of rock art in Africa. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this remarkable region contains a treasure trove of stone-age engravings and ancient bushman artwork. Set amongst towering geological formations and depicting a fascinating assortment of elephants, giraffe, rhino, hunters and bizarrely, seals and penguins, it provides incredible insight into the lives of the ancient San bushmen who once lived here.
Day 8 TWYFELFONTEIN - DAMARALAND
Continuing on towards the edge of Damaraland's Palmwag Concession this morning, the next leg of the journey takes you into some of the most pristine wilderness in Namibia. The perfect base from which to explore this beautiful setting, the short drive means that you will have plenty of time to enjoy an early lunch before heading out to explore the reserve. Options include a chance to visit one of the local villages or perhaps enjoy an afternoon nature drive and sundowners overlooking the park.
Day 9 EXPLORE DAMARALAND
You have another full day here to make the most of this incredible setting. In spite of its apparently barren appearance, this region is rich in animal and plant life and one of the highlights of any visit is a chance to track rhino on foot. In the company of a highly experienced guide, you will have an opportunity to get up close and personal with these rare and majestic creatures, learning more about their lives and the work being done to protect them.
Day 10 DAMARALAND - ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK
A long drive today will bring to you one of the highlights of your journey, the vast game-lands of Etosha National Park. One of southern Africa's most expansive game reserves, Etosha can boast an incredible diversity of wildlife that includes some 340 species of birds and over 100 species of animals. There will be plenty of opportunities en route for spotting game and enjoying a picnic lunch, before arriving at your lodge in the southern part of the park later this afternoon.
Day 11 EXPLORE ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK
Etosha is home to large herds of elephants, as well as black rhino and healthy numbers of lions and black-backed jackals. Spend the day driving across Etosha National Park from the southern boundary of the park to the eastern Von Lindquist gate. You have plenty of time to explore the network of waterholes and looped drives along the main park road. Settle into your lodge for a free afternoon and evening.
Day 12 EXPLORE ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK
Your time here is free to enjoy as you please, with an excellent network of roads linking up the best game viewing areas. Driving yourself through Etosha today affords the ideal opportunity to take in the park's incredible diversity at your own pace. Alternatively, you may prefer to spend your last day here on a guided game drive. Either way, you can be assured of a magical game viewing experience in the endless salt pans that characterise this extraordinary setting. Returning to the lodge later, you will enjoy a farewell dinner beneath the stars.
Day 13 ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK - OKONJIMA
A final morning affords an opportunity to enjoy the sunrise and a last game drive in Etosha before beginning the journey back south towards the Central Highlands. You will have free time before enjoying a sundowner whilst reflecting over your self-drive adventure in Namibia coming to an end.
Day 14 OKONJIMA RESERVE - WINDHOEK
Drive back to Windhoek today, which takes approximately an hour, to drop off your hire car at the airport before catching your onward flight where your tour ends.
EXAMPLE ACCOMMODATION
Grootberg Lodge, Damaraland
Perched on the edge of the Etendeka Plateau overlooking the Klip River Valley, the EU funded, community-owned lodge is a benchmark project in community-owned tourism. It has 14 standard and 2 family ensuite chalets with rock walls and thatched rooves to help keep them cool during the day and warm in the evenings. Chalets are spacious with comfortable beds, small writing desks, local decorations and private decks where black eagles are often spotted hunting below them. Guests have access to the dining room and veranda overlooking swimming pool. Staff can arrange elephant and rhino tracking excursions, guided plateau walks and visits to the local community as well as massage treatments.
Mushara Lodge, Eastern Etosha
Mushara lodge is located 8 km away from the Von Lindequist Gate on the Eastern boundary of Etosha National Park. It has an ideal location for travellers visiting the game reserve on self-drive or guided excursions. The lodge consists of 10 luxury chalets, triple and single rooms, and a spacious family unit. The thatched chalets are situated in a horseshoe shape around the bright blue swimming pool, a major feature at the lodge, and each chalet provides plenty of space to relax and unwind. The thatched public area boasts a private library, stocked with a collection of books for guests to read at their own leisure; an extensive bar with a wide selection of wines from the onsite wine cellar; a spacious, airy lounge complete with a welcoming fireplace for fresh winter evenings; an open dining area; and well stocked curio shop. The décor of the lodge throughout consists of an eclectic blend of modern and traditional African artwork and other original paintings.
Camp Kipwe, Twyfelfontein
Nestled between vast granite boulders and looking down the Aba Huab Valley, Camp Kipwe is one of the most dramatically situated camps in all of Namibia, which, given the competition it has, is some statement. The ten rooms at this small, exclusive camp are built amongst the boulders as well, set in large dome shaped chalets with thatched roofs to help keep them lovely and cool in summer. The front of the bedroom area can be opened up to lead out onto the large terrace which is an ideal place to enjoy morning coffee, an afternoon with a good book and even a private dinner to celebrate a special occasion. The bathrooms are partially open to the elements which is a very popular feature and gives guests a real back to nature feel, and the view from the bath is really something to behold. At the main part of the lodge there is a beautifully situated restaurant and bar area, along with a lovely swimming pool and sun deck. Activities at Camp Kipwe are varied and are focused very much on sustainable eco-tourism., including interactions with local villages and game drives to see the desert adapted animals of the area. There are also daily trips up to see the fascinating ancient bushmen rock art for which the area is so well known.
Sossusvlei Lodge, Sossusvlei
Sossusvlei Lodge offers guests traditionally warm Namibian hospitality amidst some of the county’s most stunning landscapes. 42 standard rooms all boast air conditioning and their own private patios with canvas walls to help keep them cool during the day and add a safari feel to the property. There are small dressing and storage areas between the bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms whilst family rooms have interconnecting doors between the bathroom and each room. At the heart of the lodge is the dining room and lounge, as well as a fantastic bar and beer garden. The swimming pool enjoys beautiful views out across the desert and activities can be booked from the lodge’s Adventure Centre.
Cornerstone Guesthouse, Swakopmund
Found on a residential street in Swakopmund’s old town and within walking distance of the town centre and seafront, the Cornerstone Guesthouse provides a quaint and local experience. Accommodation is split between the main house, with five double and two family rooms, and a series of self-catering apartments. The three apartments each have three bedrooms and two bathrooms, and these guests can also have breakfast in the main house should they not wish to self-cater. Relax in the lush gardens and shaded verandas found around the property when not out enjoying the full spectrum of Swakopmund’s exciting activities, which can either be booked in advance or arranged with staff locally.
Olive Grove Guesthouse, Windhoek
A small and stylish bed & breakfast tucked away in a quiet area close to the centre of Windhoek, The Olive Grove combines a convenient location, comfortable rooms and excellent service, as one of the top places to stay in the quirky Namibian capital. The 11 en-suite bedrooms all feature unique, brick-based beds and cupboards, but are wonderfully comfortable and cosy. There is a lovely little breakfast room and steps leading down to a small swimming pool and terrace where meals can be enjoyed for those not wanting to venture out. Overall, a fantastic base for a night, or possibly two, offering easy access to the attractions of Windhoek and for getting out of the city or to the airport.
Okonjima Plains Camp, Okonjima Private Game Reserve
Standing proud on the plains of the renowned Okonjima Farm, the home of the AfriCat Foundation, Okonjima Plains Camp is a charming camp to spend a couple of days enjoying the beautiful scenery and varied activities that a stay at the farm offers. The camp is made up of 24 rooms, split between Standard and View Rooms and, whilst all offer views of the surrounding plains, the View Rooms offer more spacious accommodation and more spectacular vistas. Whichever room type you choose, you will be accommodated in the utmost comfort, with en suite bathrooms, private decking areas, roof fans, mini-fridges and a large safe. The View Rooms also boast their own writing desks and chairs in which to relax. The main part of the lodge, known as The Barn, houses the lounge, dining room and curio shop, as well as a large, secluded swimming pool. A second, smaller pool is found at the far end of the camp. The food here is excellent, enjoyed in the spacious dining room with a wonderful view out across the plains. All activities at Plains Camp are bookable in advance and popular trips include a visit to the AfriCat Foundation, Leopard Viewing and visits to their Cheetah Project. Game drives, birdwatching, bushman interaction experiences and self-guided nature walks are all on offer as well.
