The Salar de Uyuni, or Salt Flats of Uyuni, was once an inland sea or giant salt-water lake, which has evaporated into the thin dry air of the Andean altitude. All that remains is the salt, tens of metres thick, lying beneath a bright sky: a sun-bleached skeleton of a dramatic dead sea. Salar de Uyuni bears a peculiar name fitting to its interesting scenery.
