Operations Manager Craig recently returned from leading our Turkmenistan: The Forgotten 'Stan group tour. We asked Craig a few questions about his favourite memory, his tips to travellers and what it's really like to explore Central Asia's most unusual country.

Best view

First sight of the Darvaza Crater as we approached at dusk. After a long drive through the Karakum Desert and miles of just sand, you suddenly see a red glow on the horizon. When you first arrive you're amazed at the size of the crater and the heat being generated.

Favourite dish

It’s got to be kebabs! We found a nice local restaurant by a river in Mary and had kebabs cooked on hot coals right in front of us. Washed down with the local beer, it's hard to beat.

Best excursion

Meeting the villagers in Damla after a three hour journey crossing the desert. The local people were so welcoming and we had lunch in one of their yurts. After lunch, we had the chance to watch a camel being milked and a walk around to get an idea of daily life in the village.

Any regrets?

Not having gone before! I have led tours in all the other ‘Stans and Turkmenistan had been on my wish list for a long time. It certainly didn’t disappoint as it's a very different destination.

Tips for travellers

Be prepared to be stared at – they don’t get many tourists in Turkmenistan. Make the effort to try to talk to people, even if they can’t understand you – it's great fun. Be careful when taking photos – government buildings are a definite no. And bring US dollars in small denominations, as sterling is not easily changed.

Favourite moment

Standing on an outcrop looking out at the multi-coloured rock formations of the Yangikala Canyon. It’s amazing that you're now in a desert, but what you are looking at was once the sea bed.
