Since opening in 2013 the Rooms Hotel in Georgia’s Kazbegi has been a real game changer for the region and, in fact, the country as a whole. I've visited a couple of times in the past few years and it's become one of my favourite places to stay in the Caucasus.

What makes it special?

There are a couple of things that make the Rooms Hotel so special. Before it was renovated back in 2013 there was no suitable hotel class accommodation in Kazbegi. Kazbegi itself is one of the most important destinations in Georgia, with its views and access to Mt Kazbegi (5047m) and the legendary Gergeti Trinity Church. Whilst we often use homestays in the region, for those who are looking for some luxury and have a couple of nights to spend, the Rooms Hotel is the perfect option.

Built from a converted former Soviet sanatorium I was surprised by quite how stylish the hotel actually is when I first visited. It truly is like Soho House in the Caucasus – beautiful rain showers in the en suite bathrooms, elegant pine floors in the communal areas, a modern and spacious swimming pool and a funky library area with authentic leather armchairs, which is a great place to unwind. The entire front section of the hotel consists of glass windows looking out onto the wonderful terrace with jaw dropping views of Mt Kazbegi.

The rooms are small but comfortable, all with balconies. The rooms at the front obviously have the best views, but there is no such thing as a bad view from this hotel in my opinion!

What’s the food like?

The food is as good as anything you’ll find elsewhere in Georgia, a country renowned for great food. It’s definitely worth checking out the impressive wine list, especially as Georgia is of course the birthplace of wine. The service levels are also excellent for this part of the world, in a country not necessarily known for its luxury accommodation. Indeed Georgia is often associated with camping and expeditions, rather than luxury and fine dining but, following the opening of the Rooms Hotel, it’s fair to say it can now offer both!

Is it easy to get there?
As a result of the hotel opening the local authorities have also improved the roads, meaning it now only takes 3 hours to get to Kazbegi from Tbilisi, rather than the 8 hour journey which was previously the case.

The Rooms Hotel is a great base to explore the mountains or to just hole up.
