Hidden Treasures: Accommodation in Rajasthan

Rajasthan brings to mind a place always abuzz, full of people, vibrant colours, hill forts, palace hotels and vast stretches of deserts. Well, far from it...

It is amazing to note how one of the more populous states of India still has many spots just tucked away not too far from the mainstream, yet far enough to offer you peace, exclusivity and the experiential stay that you seek on your getaway.

Rajasthan is a land full of surprises and so never dull, even after having visited it a few times. Going looking for these new places is like a game of treasure hunt. It never ceases to surprise you what they can offer to a discerning traveller. Here are some of my favourite picks.

Devshree, Deogarh

A very classy and elegant offering, it exudes the warmth and welcome of its owners, who have been involved in every aspect of its designing and decorating. The attention to every detail is evident and the property enjoys a scenic location facing the lake. Among other more active options provided by Devshree, you can choose to relax with a book by the pool, in their gardens or just watching the bird life around the lake. It is an experience you will cherish.

Mountbatten Lodge, Ranakpur

A secret hideaway in busy Ranakpur, slightly away from the busy Ranakpur temples, it is hard to imagine an exquisite property like Mountbatten Lodge tucked away in the hills. As you turn off the main town all you see is abundant greenery all around you and a few kms into the drive gives you the feel of being far out in the wild. This stylish 4 suite lodge is unique and exquisite as this is built around the existing trees and rocks. Enjoy the sights and sounds of nature, and the feel of being away from it all, yet so close to all the hustle and bustle of the nearby towns.

Juna Mahal, Ranthambore

The name very literally translates to Old Palace, and true to its name, it stands out like a fortress in the midst of farmlands, only a short distance away from the Ranthambore park gates. In a town where most hotels are literally wall to wall, to enjoy proximity to the park gates, and lacking any views, Juna Mahal is like a breath of fresh air, with spacious, airy rooms, all done up to high standards. This was built with the idea of providing travellers on a heritage trail in Rajasthan something in line with all their accommodation. Though constructed from scratch, this not only meets those requirements, but promises its guests tranquil and amazing views of the sunrise and sunset over the surrounding hills and farmlands.

Malji Ka Kamra, Churu

An Art Nouveau style building - now this is something quite unique and perhaps one of its kind in Rajasthan, the land of massive fortresses, opulent palaces and shekhawati frescos. As you enter the gates of this property located in the historic square of Churu town, one is struck by the building in aqua green and white, with high arches and pillared design. The owners spent about 7 years lovingly restoring this crumbling building in the historic square. Guests here can enjoy guided walks in the surrounding town, with its beautiful frescoed streets and artisans at work, carrying on the age old traditions of an era gone by. Very well worth a visit to add an entirely different dimension to one’s Rajasthan trip.
