Surrounded by its Balkan neighbours, this landlocked gem is still refreshingly unspoiled by the trappings of mass tourism and can boast no fewer than four UNESCO cultural monuments including the medieval capital of Stari Ras and the 13th century monastery of Sopocani. With a history imbued with a rich mix of eastern and western traditions, the region is soaked in Ottoman culture, Serbian nationalism and the historical reminders of its Orthodox heritage. Home to some of the most pristine landscapes left in Europe, its national parks are amongst the most beautiful in the region, with Tara National Park often being called the “lungs of Serbia”.
From the art nouveau architecture of captivating Subotica, to the monastery filled forests of Fruška National Park, this is a country of quite remarkable charm and scope. Emerging from decades of political and social turmoil, the Serbia of today can boast excellent wineries, some of the best restaurants in eastern Europe and ski resorts that are amongst the finest anywhere in the Balkans. Add to that the picturesque charms of traditional villages like Sremski Karlovci and the spectacular vistas of its national parks, and you have a destination of quite extraordinary allure.

USEFUL INFORMATION
Health and Vaccinations
There are no mandatory immunisations for travellers to Serbia though you should be up to date with Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio and Hepatitis A. We recommend you seek advice from your local GP or travel centre as to the correct immunisations and preventative treatments.
Currency
In Serbia the official unit of currency is the Dinar.

Cultural Sensitivity
On our tours you will frequently interact with local people, each with their own distinct customs and traditions. We therefore ask you to be considerate and to treat them with respect. Your tour-leaders and guides will always be able to advise you accordingly.
In the churches and cathedrals women should cover their heads with a scarf or hat, while men should take their hats off.
Language & Religion
Serbia has been traditionally a Christian country since the Christianization of Serbs by Byzantine Christian missionaries Cyril and Methodius in the 9th century. Therefore, the dominant confession is Eastern Orthodoxy of the Serbian Orthodox Church. During the Ottoman rule of the Balkans, Sunni Islam established itself in the territories of Serbia, mainly in southern regions of Sandžak, Preševo, and Bujanovac. Roman Catholicism has roots in the country since the presence of Hungarians in Vojvodina (mainly in the northern part of the province), while Protestantism arrived in the 18th and 19th century with the settlement of Slovaks in Vojvodina. The Serbian language is spoken in Serbia.

Food and drink
In this region meat seems to be the predominant ingredient although seasonal fruits and vegetables are widely available. The national dishes in Serbia include pljeskavica (a ground beef/pork patty), ćevapi (grilled minced meat), and Karađorđeva šnicla (Karageorge's schniztel). The national drink is the plum brandy šljivovica or homemade rakija.
