Day 1 Bangalore – Mysore: Arrival
On arrival in Bangalore today, you will be met at the airport by your Wild Frontiers representative and driven to Mysore, travelling via the culturally and historically important town of Srirangapatnam.
Day 2 Mysore: Flower Market & Royal Palace
A day in the cultural capital of Karnataka provides an opportunity to enjoy the city that once lay at the heart of the Mysore Princely Kingdom. Begin the day with a visit to the colourful and less-visited Devaraja Flower Market, a wonderful way to observe daily life in the city. Accompanied by a local guide you'll then learn about the battles fought between the British and Tipu Sultan, the famed “Tiger of Mysore”. You'll also visit Mysore's opulent palace, still the official residence of the Wadiyar dynasty that once ruled here. Finally, you'll enjoy the colour and vibrancy of the local markets and discover first hand why food is as important as tradition to the residents of Mysore.
Day 3 Mysore – Hassan: Free Time in Mysore
A further morning in Mysore allows you to explore the city under your own steam, take in some of the architecture, perhaps the Jaganmohan Palace which houses the Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery. The city is also known as a centre for yoga and there are many ayurvedic centres where you can have a treatment. In the afternoon drive on to Hassan.
Day 4 Hassan: Hoysala Temples
Hassan lies in the heart of the Hoysala Kingdom, a powerful empire that ruled between the 10th and 14th centuries known for its art, architecture and religion, and left behind a large collection of palaces and temples in their distinctive architectural form. Head this morning to Belur, home to the Channakeshava Temple, over a century in building, temple has been in use for over 900 years and still sees daily worshippers for the puja ceremonies. The second capital Halebid also pays tribute to the architectural forms with the stunning Hoysaleswara Temple rising from the city with its black stone inner sanctum and intricately sculpted outer walls. A visit to Shrivanabelagola will involve a walk up 614 steps to the epic 17.5m high statue of Gomateshvara, a Jain deity. The statue looks out across the landscape and was carved from a single piece of granite in the 1st century.
Day 5 Hassan – Nagarhole National Park: Explore Kabini River
Journey to Nagarhole National Park, an area of deciduous forest by the Kabini River which houses an array of large mammals such as tigers, leopards and elephants as well as over 250 species of birds. With a free afternoon there is time to relax by the pool or sit out on the viewing deck spotting some of the birdlife, if this sounds too restful then it is possible to take one of the bicycle from the lodge to explore the countryside and rural communities.
Day 6 Nagarhole National Park: Jungle Safari
Soak up the landscapes of the national park as you head out in a canter vehicle passing through forests and along the Kabini Reservoir searching for the many species of mammals and birds as well as enjoying the variety of flora that can be found. Pause to watch the birds wading in the rivers and search the trees for those elusive tigers or perhaps a leopard.
Day 7 Nagarhole National Park – Ooty: Hill Station
Today you will be transferred to the pretty hill station of Ooty. Located in the heart of lofty mountains and dense forest, Ooty used to be a popular getaway for the British of the colonial Raj. A guided tour of the town after lunch today will include a visit to the impressive St Stephens Church, whose timber framework was taken from the palace of Tipu Sultan after his defeat by the British in the Mysore War. You'll also explore the beautifully maintained Botanical Gardens, whose oldest inhabitant is a 20-million-year-old fossilised tree.
Day 8 Ooty – Coonoor – Madurai: Nilgiri Mountain Railway
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is one of the oldest mountain railways in India. Running through the Western Ghats between Ooty and Coonoor, the railroad was built by the British in 1908 and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. Still operated by a fleet of steam locomotives, it offers a wonderful glimpse of a golden age of travel. On arrival in Coonoor you will be met and driven on to the temple city of Madurai, where you will head to the Sri Meenakshi Temple to witness the noise and colour of the evening ceremony.
Day 9 Madurai – Karaikudi – Chettinad: Merchants’ Mansions & Cookery Class
The Chettinad region is the traditional homeland of the Nattukottai Chettiars, wealthy merchants who were known for their opulent displays of wealth. Leaving Madurai your first port of call will be the ancient streets and antique markets of Karaikudi, a heritage town famed for its palatial limestone houses and its distinctive cuisine. This afternoon then sees you joining a cooking class under the expert guidance of a local chef, where you will learn how to prepare and make some classic Chettinad dishes.
Day 10 Chettinad – Thanjavur: UNESCO Temples
Departing for Thanjavur you'll travel by way of a roadside village dedicated to the Hindu deity, Ayyanar, one of Tamil Nadu's guardian folk deities. Thousands of terracotta horses flank the roadside and there will be an opportunity to visit the temple before continuing towards the royal city of Thanjavur. One of the oldest cities in India and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this afternoon provides an opportunity to visit Thanjavur's famous Brihadeshwara Temple and Fort, one of India's most magnificent architectural monuments.
Day 11 Thanjavur – Kumbakonam: Chola Artworks
Continuing your exploration of Thanjavur this morning you'll pay a visit to Tanjore Palace, whose galleries house a large collection of Chola bronzes, Tanjore painting and precious stones. A visit to a bronze works and a Veena (traditional Indian musical instrument) making centre is then followed by a short drive on to the 'temple city' of Kumbakonam. Breaking the journey en route at Darasuram, you'll have an opportunity to visit the UNESCO temple of Airavatesvara, built by Rajaraja Chola II in the 12th century.
Day 12 Kumbakonam: Tranquebar Danish Fort
Formerly known as Tranquebar, the coastal town of Tharangambadi was once home to the first Danish trading post in India. Established in 1620, and eventually sold on to the British East India Company, the colony was home to the second largest Danish fort ever constructed (Fort Dansborg). Your visit today will include the imposing ramparts and bastions of the fort, as well as the New Jerusalem Church and the Tranquebar Museum, which is home to an impressive collection of 17th and 18th century antiquities and relics.
Day 13 Kumbakonam – Chidambaram Temple – Pondicherry: Food Tour
You head next towards India's French Riviera and the bustling city of Pondicherry, one of South India's most popular destinations. The drive takes you by way of the huge towers and intricate carvings of the Chidambaram Temple, whose 10th century origins make this one of the oldest surviving active temples in South India. On arrival in Pondicherry the afternoon then sees you setting out on a food tour, savouring the stories and flavours of a city whose tastes have been refined and reinvented during centuries of trade and tradition.
Day 14 Pondicherry – Mahabalipuram: Walking Tour With A Local
This morning discover the Tamil and French historic quarters of Pondicherry on a guided walking tour, stopping by such sights as the 17th century church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception and the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, founded by one of the most influential ashrams in all India. Finish the morning with a guided tour from Storytrails, who hire local people as storytellers in order to give visitors an insight into the many myths and rituals behind every day Indian life. After you will drive north to the beautiful coastal town of Mahabalipuram, lying beside the waters of the Bay of Bengal sits the once great port city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that can trace its origins back to the 7th century. Built by the kings of the Pallava dynasty and famed for its seven Rathas (temple chariots), it is home to some of the earliest examples of Dravidian architecture on the subcontinent including the magnificent Shore Temple, one of the oldest stone buildings in India.
Day 15 Mahabalipuram: Beachside Relaxation
With your hotel located close to the beach, today offers up a chance to relax and reflect on the journey, with a free day beside the picturesque waters of the Bay of Bengal.
Day 16 Mahabalipuram – Chennai: Departure
Transfer to Chennai in time to connect with onward flight.

Mantra Koodam, Kumbakonam
Mantra Koodam’s rural location allows for a peaceful escape on the road to/from Tanjore. Kumbakonam is a beautiful town known for its many temples and weaving families. As you enter reception, ring the welcome bell for good luck. Throughout the day, villagers can be seen performing poojas in and around the property. The gardens provide refuge for parrots and peacocks, as well as host the Chettinad style accommodations. Each cottage has a characteristically opulent Chettinad door, beautifully carved out of Burmese wood, and Athangudi tiles. The outdoor bathrooms and verandas bring you closer to nature. Relax in the outdoor pool, traditional tea shop or restaurant between activities. As with most CGH properties, filtered water is served in glass bottles to reduce plastic waste and there are complimentary activities such as pottery demonstrations, kolam making and weaving house visits.
Taj Fishermans Cove, Mahabalipuram
Situated between Chennai and Mahabalipuram, the five-star Taj Fishermans Cove offers a peaceful beach escape. The property is built on the walls of an old Dutch fort along the coastline of the Bay of Bengal. The private beachfront location ensures delicious fresh seafood is served at the romantic beachside restaurant. The multi-cuisine restaurant and poolside bar also provide stunning settings for wining and dining. The Scandinavian style cottages are spread around the tropical gardens and some feature an outdoor shower, sea views and/or a private garden. There are also rooms in the main building. Activities include olive ridley turtle walks (Jan-Apr), city tours and Mahabalipuram day trips, perfectly complimented by a treatment in the spa or work out in the fitness centre.
Heritage Madurai, Madurai
Once the housed community of a British company, Heritage Madurai is now a four-star hotel within the city of Madurai. The reception leads onto the breakfast room, lounge bar and temple style outdoor pool. There is also the special opportunity to dine under a 200-year-old banyan tree in the restaurant designed by Geoffrey Bawa. The rooms are set in blocks and the villas feature private plunge pools and a sun deck. A pottery demonstration area and traditional tea shop are complimentary for guests and are in the gardens. Additionally, there is a spa, badminton court and a gym for recreational time.
Svatma, Tanjore
Svatma is a beautiful heritage property providing excellent service and unique experiences. Built using local materials and with traditional architecture, part of the Svatma hotel was once a family home that has now been restored to its original beauty. The Tamil art and curated antiques create a romantic atmosphere which continues in the garden and beautiful pool. Many details of the hotel are gathered from a begone era including the 220-year-old porch rescued from a Chettinad home, now hanging over the bar. The 38 rooms or suites are all spacious and uniquely designed to reflect various aspects of the local Tamilian culture and styles. The hotel serves only vegetarian dishes, the thali is recommended, and guests can enjoy these either in the dining room, terrace or at the rooftop bar. The spa is in the modern wing and has the unique service of sound therapy, amongst others. As with most CGH properties, filtered water is served in glass bottles and there are daily experiences included such as musical performances, Kolam making or cooking demonstrations.
Visalam, Chettinad
Visalam is a real gem in the heart of Tamil Nadu where a warm and friendly staff will go out of their way to make your stay an unforgettable experience. This century old mansion, has been converted into a lovely boutique hotel comprising of 15 very spacious rooms, simply furnished yet with a warm and elegant character. The central courtyard surrounded by colonnades and featuring traditional tiles transports you to the opulent time of the Chettiar lifestyle. Hidden within the garden is an outdoor pool with bubble jets, located next to the dining area. At Visalam you can savour the flavours and aromas of Southern India and even try your hand at cooking by attending the hotel’s culinary demonstration. Alcohol is not served here. As with most CGH properties, filtered water is served in glass bottles and there are daily experiences included such as Kolam making or village cycling.
Green Hotel, Mysore
Originally built for the princesses of Mysore, the former Chittaranjan Palace dates from the turn of the last century. Beautifully restored as a heritage hotel, it now offers guests a choice of 31 characterful rooms that offer all the ambience of old world charm, with en suite facilities and ceiling fans. Its extensive gardens are fringed by majestic trees, instilling in the property an oasis of calm, whilst the hotel's restaurant is famed throughout Mysore for its comprehensive, organic cuisine. Situated south of Bandipur National Park in Tamil Nadu, this high end property is part of the Taj group, well-known for its excellent service.
