Named after a great medieval trading empire, Ghana today is a destination of quite extraordinary contrasts. Multi-ethnic, forged by the conflicts of ancient empires and colonial imperialism, it is a land that perfectly encapsulates the rich cultural traditions of West Africa.
This remarkable journey takes us from its bustling capital, Accra, deep into the lush forests of the Volta region and crossing over to the heart of Ashanti country before finishing at the golden beaches of its Atlantic coast. Largely undiscovered, Ghana provides some truly authentic encounters, from traditional celebrations of the Ashanti people to an outdoor movie night with locals in a remote village. Along the way there will also be opportunities to visit one of the highest waterfalls in West Africa, kayak on the gentle waters of a lagoon and learn to cook Ghanaian style.
Filled with historic castles, African flair and some truly unique encounters with local customs and characters, this is an adventure into a region that is largely still not fixed on the mainstream tourist radar. If one word could describe this journey, it would be genuine.

Individual departures may vary so please refer to the information in the tour specific links in the Dates and Prices section below
Day 1 Tour starts in Accra
Day 1 Tour starts in Accra
The capital and largest city in Ghana, Accra is our starting point for this unique African adventure. Located on the country’s southern coast, overlooking the Gulf of Guinea, Accra was once used as the capital of the British Gold Coast and reminders and remnants of its colonial past can still be found amongst the tropical modernist architecture of the modern-day capital.
Day 2 Accra: The capital past & present
Day 2 Accra: The capital past & present
The day begins with a morning tour of the city, during which we will meet a well-known coffin maker whose elaborate designs have made him something of a local celebrity. This will be followed by a tour of Independence Square and the Kwame Nkrumah Park & Mausoleum, dedicated to the memory of the first president of the Ghanaian Republic. After lunch, we then head for the historic neighbourhood of Jamestown for a tour of one of the capital's less-affluent neighbourhoods in the company of a local resident followed by dinner and live jazz music at his trendy cafe.
Day 3 Accra - Wli Waterfall: Tafi Atome Community & Monkey Sanctuary
Day 3 Accra - Wli Waterfall: Tafi Atome Community & Monkey Sanctuary
After breakfast this morning, we will begin the drive north east towards the border with neighbouring Togo. Our destination is the Volta region home to the dramatic cascades of the Wli Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in West Africa. Our journey takes us by way of the village of Tafi Atome, where locals have embraced community tourism and will provide some insight into the area during a tour of the monkey sanctuary. The local mona monkeys that live here were once believed to be the messengers of the gods and the villagers have taken great strides in recent years to protect and preserve both their traditional customs and their simian neighbours.
*Please note that today's drive is the longest of the tour, taking around 5-6 hours.
Day 4 Wli Waterfall - Mount Afadjato - Akosombo: Hiking in the Volta Region
Day 4 Wli Waterfall - Mount Afadjato - Akosombo: Hiking in the Volta Region
This morning we have the opportunity to enjoy a hike out to the impressive Wli Falls. Taking around 45 minutes, the walk affords us the opportunity to enjoy a swim in the inviting pools at its base, or to continue on to the upper falls an hour further on. For those in the mood for more hiking, there will also be the opportunity to walk up Mt. Afadjato, Ghana’s highest peak at around 885 metres. Not a difficult climb, it does nonetheless require a degree of physical endurance, but the views from the summit look out across the lush Volta region. This afternoon we then transfer on to Akosombo, arriving in time for a scenic sunset river cruise along the Volta River.
Wli Waterfalls is approx. 2-3hrs walking (total distance 5km)
Mt. Afadjato is approx. 3-4hrs walking (total distance 4km)
Day 5 Akosombo - Krobo - Kumasi: Family bead workshop
Day 5 Akosombo - Krobo - Kumasi: Family bead workshop
Home to the Volta Hydroelectric Dam, the village of Akosombo sits along the shores of the largest man-made lake in the world by surface area. This area is also renowned for its beadwork and this morning we will visit a small-scale family workshop in Krobo to learn more about this traditional craft and even try our hand at making some bead bracelets of our own. This afternoon, our journey then continues into the historic Ashanti region, as we head towards the city of Kumasi and the cultural heartlands of the old Ashanti Empire.
*Please note that today's drive takes around 5 hours, not including stops for lunch and the bead-making workshop in Krobo along the way.
Day 6 Kumasi: Kente cloth & the Ashanti
Day 6 Kumasi: Kente cloth & the Ashanti
This morning we visit a local community tourism project involved in the making of traditional Kente cloth, worn by African kings for centuries. Another type of cloth produced locally is Adinkra, whose colourful designs are created from plant dyes and we’ll get an opportunity to create some unique prints of our own as a souvenir, before a final stop at the UNESCO Asante Traditional Buildings Site. This afternoon we then take a tour of the Manhyia Palace, the official residence of the Asantehene, the ceremonial ruler of the modern Ashanti, before exploring Kejetia Market, the largest of its kind in the country.
Day 7 Kumasi - Bonkro: Optional Community Activities
Day 7 Kumasi - Bonkro: Optional Community Activities
Departing Kumasi this morning we head next to the small village of Bonkro for a taste of rural life in the Ghanaian bush. On the way, we'll stop off at a small town market to pick up some ingredients for our guesthouse stay. Upon our afternoon arrival, there will then be the option to either take part in cooking lesson or a walk in search of one of rarest birds on the entire continent, the white-necked rockfowl (or picathartes). Later this evening there are also options to take a night jungle walk or to join the local villagers with some popcorn for an outdoor movie night in the garden of our guesthouse.
Day 8 Bonkro - Kakum NP - Elmina: Coco plantation cycle & hanging rainforest canopy bridges
Day 8 Bonkro - Kakum NP - Elmina: Coco plantation cycle & hanging rainforest canopy bridges
Our stay in Bonkro affords us some quite unforgettable local interaction, and this morning the experience is capped off with a cycle ride to a family run Fairtrade cocoa plantation. After a tour of the plantation we’ll continue by bike to take part in an ongoing tree planting project, providing some much needed shade for a local school. This afternoon we'll then transfer by road to the Kakum National Park for a canopy walk through the forest, before the day’s end sees us in the town of Elmina on Ghana’s southern coast.
*see the SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION and KEY INFORMATION sections below for more information on cycling in Ghana.
Day 9 Elmina: Fishermen, chiefs & a sunset kayak
Day 9 Elmina: Fishermen, chiefs & a sunset kayak
Elmina is home to a rich fishing community and this morning we will hopefully witness the boats coming in as the day starts for the town's local residents. Later we'll head to a meeting with a local Iture chief sure to leave us with a profound and lasting understanding of Ghana's rich heritage. Following in the traditions of their Iture forebears, the community will come together to greet us as foreign dignitaries at a welcome ceremony in our honour. After a bit of downtime back at the hotel, this afternoon sees us making the most of our surroundings with a gentle kayak through an inland lagoon and past an artisanal salt processing operation to the shores of the Atlantic Coast, before enjoying a beachside dinner, complete with a bonfire and a drumming workshop and performance for a farewell dinner like no other.
*the kayaking today is very easy and those who do not wish to kayak can be kayaked by one of the guides or driven to the beach instead.
Day 10 Elmina - Cape Coast Castle - Tour ends in Accra
Day 10 Elmina - Cape Coast Castle - Tour ends in Accra
Ending with a visit to one of around 40 ‘slave castles’ that were built on West Africa’s Gold Coast by European colonisers, our time in this rich land is brought to a close with a tour of Ghana's most iconic site, the infamous Cape Coast Castle. Built originally as a Portuguese trading post, today its inclusion on UNESCO’s World Heritage List signifies its importance as both a reminder of the grim history of the Atlantic gold and slave trades and a more positive vision for the future. Returning to the hotel for lunch, there will then be some downtime this afternoon before being transferred back to Accra, around three hours away.
ACCOMMODATION USED ON THIS TOUR
La Villa Boutique, Accra
Located in a central suburb of Accra, La Villa Boutique provides a stylish haven to come back to after a day of sightseeing around the capital. The outdoor pool is shaded by tropical palms, set in front of the restaurant and bar for the perfect lounging retreat. Rooms are airy with contemporary furniture and plenty of local charisma.
Wli Water Heights Hotel, Wli Waterfall
Nestled within the forests of the Volta Region the buildings at the hotel grounds are adorned with lush vegetation. Though simple, the lodging here offers the best accommodation in the area, a stone's throw from the country's tallest waterfall, the hotel's namesake, and its highest mountain. Rooms are found within the various buildings and bungalows spread across the property and come with basic three-star amenities and no-frills furnishings. Though what the interior design lacks, the exotic setting makes up for. On site is also a restaurant with a very local feel, serving popular national dishes.
Afrikiko River Front Resort, Akosombo
Occupying an enviable position on the Volta River, Afrikiko is a popular place for the capital dwellers to escape to. Set amongst the gardens, rooms come with the deep wood furniture of the region and are plainly styled. There is an outdoor pool, perfect for cooling off in but the hotel's standout feature (outdoing the high-end hotel a little further down the river) has to be it's riverside restaurant. Having brought the culinary success of its restaurant in Accra to the hotel here in the cooler getaway of Akosombo, guests can enjoy a Ghanaian feast with entertainment before boarding one of the hotel's comfy boats from the restaurant deck for a cruise along the river.
Lancaster Kumasi City, Kumasi
Located in the centre of the city, the Lancaster is a four-star hotel offering one of the most comfortable stays in Kumasi. The large resort-style hotel houses around 160 rooms. Favoured by business clients, it boasts perhaps the best facilities in the city, including a large outdoor pool, fitness centre, beauty salon and a well-stocked restaurant and bar serving a wide variety of dishes. Rooms are reasonably sized and well furnished.
*Please note that the fitness centre is currently under renovation.
Bonkro Guesthouse, Bonkro
Bonkro Guesthouse is situated in a small village in the Ghanaian bush. In addition to the local school, the guesthouse was the brainchild of a Ghanaian foundation that works to improve the facilities and opportunities of the local communities here, as well as protecting the adjacent rainforest reserve – particularly the picathartes bird – from logging and timber concessions. Homemade meals are cooked in the kitchen, which guests are invited to enter for a personal cooking class with the head chef, and served in the alfresco dining area looking out to the garden and the central pop-up screen – the village’s de facto cinema. Scattered around the garden are the 11, well-built chalets which are very spacious and simply furnished, providing very comfortable lodging in this remote region.
Golden Hill Parker Hotel, Elmina
Set above Elmina on a hill with glorious views over the city and out to the sea, the Golden Hill Parker Hotel offers some great features such as an infinity pool and outdoor terrace boasting sea views and a buzzing restaurant offering an extensive menu of fresh local dishes. Interestingly rooms have a slightly oriental design with deep red tones and patterned furnishings. Amenities in the rooms and throughout the hotel are up to the standard found in the capital and Golden Hill Parker is considered one of the higher-end hotels in Elmina.

Additional Details
Responsible Travel
With local people, culture and eco-systems in mind, responsible travel and sustainable tourism are at the core of Wild Frontiers. We believe that a successful trip not only delivers a unique and unsurpassable journey for our travellers but also benefits the people and places we visit.
When designing our tours, we actively seek out experiences that have a positive impact on the communities and precious environments we visit - from supporting social enterprises; resting our heads in rural homestays; and eating at locally owned restaurants; to helping fund conservation projects that protect wildlife and their habitats.
Visit the Responsible Travel area of our website to read more, including the work of the Wild Frontiers Foundation through which we fundraise to aid community empowerment and education projects.
Reducing Single Use Plastic
We recognise the environmental issues and challenges around single-use plastic in many countries we visit and are actively working with our partners on the ground to reduce plastic waste on our tours and within the hotels and restaurants we visit. You can help to reduce your personal plastic waste by taking a refillable, filtered water bottle with you on your trip. Filtered water bottles can be refilled from water sources including your hotel room and restaurant taps, drinking fountains and refill stations. Every time you refill your bottle without the use of single-use plastic, you will be helping to reduce waste and protect the environment. Filtered Water Bottles | Wild Frontiers (wildfrontierstravel.com)
Visiting Community Tourism Projects
This trip incorporates a number of community tourism projects in different regions of the country including: the visit and tour of the monkey sanctuary at Afi Atome village with one of the community members; heading outside Kumasi to learn about Kente cloth at the successful Adanwomase community project that more recently were able to build a community water pump; and enjoying a stay and activities at the Bonkro Guesthouse run by a local foundation.
Using Small Local Businesses
Small-scale businesses abound, this itinerary makes good use of the country’s entrepreneurial talents supporting local and independent business owners including: visiting a popular coffin maker and taking a tour of Jamestown with a local resident (as well as dining at his café) in Accra; stopping for a bead-making workshop at a rural family operation in Krobo; learning about adinkra cloth at a generations-old family business; learning about Ghana’s coco trade from a Fairtrade family plantation; meeting with local fishermen in and around Elmina; hiring a local drumming school for a workshop and performance for our final dinner.
Having a Positive Impact on the Environment
Proceeds from our stay at Bonkro Guesthouse proudly go towards helping its parent foundation in their activism to protect the adjoining rainforest and, in particular, the rare picathartes bird from logging concessions. During our time here, we also encourage our clients to plant a tree at a local school that we’ll be passing during our bike ride.

On this tour there is an option of extending your time in Ghana to head up to the Mole National Park in the north after the group tour. Please note that this tour extension may be shared with other clients booked on your group tour departure. Details of the additional itinerary can be found below.
Day 1: After heading back to the capital, Accra, at the end of the group tour, those not doing the extension will be taken to the airport for their overnight flight home while those doing the extension will settle into their hotel in the city.
Hotel: La Villa Boutique or similar (B/L/D)
Day 2: We’ll take a morning flight up to the town of Tamale in the north of the country and transfer to our hotel within the Mole National Park. In the afternoon we’ll head out on our first safari in search of bush elephants via a game drive and on foot.
Hotel: Mole Motel or similar (B/L/D)
Day 3: An early morning game drive shows the national park forests in a different light with plenty of time to cover more ground not seen the previous day before heading back to the hotel for lunch. This afternoon we’ll take the opportunity to explore the peoples, cultures and life up in the North, distinct from the South. We’ll head to a village where, as is customary, we’ll be officially welcomed by the chief dressed in his traditional animal skin attire, before being given permission to tour some of the village homesteads with him and perhaps a boat ride. A lot of the country’s shea butter comes from this region so we’ll also take the opportunity to visit a shea plantation before heading back to the hotel.
Hotel: Mole Motel or similar (B/L/D)
Day 4: Transferring back to the airport in Tamale this morning, we’ll stop at the aesthetically unique Larabanga Mosque found here in the Islamic North of the country. After the short flight back down to the capital, we’ll head back to the hotel in Accra for the final night.
Hotel: La Villa Boutique or similar (B/L/D)
Day 5: Depending on your flight time, you may have most of today free for some last-minute shopping and exploring or the chance to relax by the pool and unwind, before being taken back to the airport.

On Two Wheels
Bicycles are a great low-impact way to see the countryside when travelling. In this itinerary, during our time in rural Bonkro, a tour to visit a nearby family coco plantation and a local school by bike has been arranged. Although not very strenuous, it's important to note that the roads in this remote area of the country are not paved and can be bumpy, making for an exhilarating adventure. Helmets and knee and elbow pads are provided and we recommend that all clients make use of them. However, please also note that anyone wishing to opt out of the cycle ride can easily do so and can join the group in a vehicle at the end of each leg of the ride.Getting There

Key Information
CLIMATE
Overall, Ghana is considered to have a tropical climate with high humidity (around 80-90% throughout the year), though the lesser-visited north is far more arid with a regional climate distinct from the south. October-March is a good time to travel due to experiencing the lowest rainfall and slightly lower levels of humidity. Average daytime temperatures throughout the dry season will tend to hover around the upper 20Cs to early 30Cs, with temperatures dropping by about 5 degrees or so in the evenings. The eastern Volta region is the coolest in the country, usually staying below 30 degrees Celsius.
IS THIS TRIP FOR ME?
It may sound obvious but Wild Frontiers tours are not always for everyone and it is important to us that the tour you choose is the most suitable. All our tours have a fitness rating as a guideline but you should check the day-by-day itinerary carefully. In certain instances we may ask you to complete a travel questionnaire before confirming your booking in order to ensure your suitability. Should you have any concerns about your ability to partake in any aspect of the tour then please contact the office.
KEY ASPECTS TO CONSIDER
Anyone in a reasonable state of health with an open mind and a sense of adventure should be perfectly able to cope with this tour, however, please note that there is a bit of hiking on day 4 of the itinerary near Wli Waterfall. Mount Afadjato is Ghana's tallest mountain and is around a two-hour hike up, though at only 885m, a slightly-above-average level of fitness and a desire to get to the top should suffice to partake in the experience. The hike can also be sat out if preferred. During our time in Bonkro, a bike ride has been arranged which, again, would require a similar fitness level as roads there are bumpy and there is a small hill enroute. There are also a couple of days with drives of around five hours that travellers should be aware of. All other transfers on this tour are typically two to three hours long.
Though vegetarians can be catered for, the variety of food will be limited at times. This is not a ‘foodie’ tour and our main evening meals are likely to consist of a combination of chicken/fish, vegetables and basic carbs. Clients with specific dietary requirements might struggle at times on this tour so this should be discussed with the office before booking. Please be aware that if you suffer from any kind of nut allergy you must discuss this with the office before booking this tour as nuts are used so extensively in food throughout the West Africa region.
RECCE TOURS
As we all know, the world is a constantly changing place - destinations & routes that were once cutting-edge now regularly find themselves appearing in mainstream brochures. Coming up with truly original tour ideas is a constant challenge but at Wild Frontiers we are committed to offering you a real alternative to the mainstream and each year we run a handful of new and original adventures. These are our so-called Recce Tours and since the very beginning have proven incredibly popular with those of you who like to act as our “guinea pigs” and join us on these tours. Fantastic fun and highly rewarding, Recce Tours will assuredly not go 100% to plan and it is not uncommon for clients to take an active role in tweaking the itineraries along the way. More challenging than our normal tours, these will often require a greater degree of flexibility...they will not be for everyone.
THE NATURE OF ADVENTURE TRAVEL
We feel that it’s worth pointing out that while we will always strive to stick as close to the stated itinerary as possible, it may be necessary from time to time to make changes to our itineraries or services (due to weather, political and religious influences etc.) and this can happen with little or no notice. This unpredictability can be one of the most exciting aspects of adventure travel and for many of our clients often leads to unexpected highlights as the tour-leader necessarily adapts the tour to the changing conditions. However we are aware that this lack of assuredness may not suit everyone. As such, with the greatest respect, if you are someone who needs to know that everything will happen exactly as planned, we would kindly suggest that perhaps our tours are not for you. Adventure travel can be infectious and once you’ve caught the bug, it is likely to never leave you, but especially if this is your first such tour we would strongly urge you to give us a call if you have any concerns whatsoever about your suitability for this trip.
TRAVELLING SOLO AND SINGLE SUPPLEMENTS
As a company approximately 70% of our clients are solo travellers, so it’s very unlikely you’ll be alone!
Our prices are typically based on twin-share accommodation but single supplements are not compulsory for any Wild Frontiers tour. If you prefer not to pay a single supplement we’ll pair you with someone else of the same sex for you to share with throughout the trip. On this trip, if you do opt to pay for a single supplement then please note that it will cover you for all nights of the tour.
Please note that paying a single supplement entitles you to lone occupancy of a single room. In many cases these rooms will be of the same size as a double/twin room, but in some cases they may be smaller.
INSURANCE
Insurance that provides cover for emergency repatriation in case of a medical emergency is compulsory for all tours. You should be aware that due to some of the geographical areas visited and some of the activities included on certain of our trips some standard insurance policies may not always provide adequate cover. As such we strongly recommend that you purchase a policy that adequately covers your trip. Please see the Insurance section for more details.
