Its name translated as 'gates', Darvaza is a small Turkmen settlement located close to the border with the Dashoguz region, and the start of a special permit zone. Darvaza has 350 inhabitants, most of them Turkmens of the Teke tribe, and at the settlement many people continue their half-nomadic lifestyle by setting up yurts in front of their simple houses.

Camp next to the Gates of Hell
Camp next to the Darvaza gas craters for the night, amongst a settlement of 300 people of the Teke tribe. As a result of Soviet gas exploration in the desert, some of the craters are on fire and their incredible blaze is visible for several miles.
Visit villages Bokurdak and Erbent
Traveling inland through the Kara Kum Desert with its moving sands and sparse vegetation of saksaul, acacia and kandym bushes. Stop at the village of Bokurdak, where the locals live in village houses made of unfired brick or in yurts as semi-nomads.
Spend some time with a local family
