Overview
Wherever we travel we’ll be sure to encounter scattered families of Mongolians who – surprisingly perhaps for a land that gave birth to the likes of Genghis Khan – are incredibly hospitable and are usually more than happy to welcome passing travellers into their gers.
This is an adventurous 4WD trip, with long drives and much of the journey being on dirt roads but it is also highly rewarding with spectacular scenery and memorable sights throughout. Offering plenty of good walks and cultural interactions, this comprehensive tour offers a variety of experiences that is hard to beat.

ACCOMMODATION
As an overall ethos, wherever possible we aim to use characterful accommodation that enhances the overall travel experience, not just offers a bed for the night. This can obviously vary dramatically from country to country and from trip to trip.On this particular trip we will be in hotels for three nights (in Ulaanbaatar & Bayankhongor) and in ger camps for the rest of the trip. Whilst staying in the ger camps you will sleep in a native Mongolian dwelling which Russians call yurts. Although not luxurious, they are clean, comfortable and cosy. Each ger is equipped with a bed, linen, stove and usually a small wash stand. Whilst most of the camps do have electricity 24/7 there are some that are run through a generator and electricity is only available during certain times.
Please note when staying at the Gobi Oasis Homestay there are a mix of gers and rooms so the group will be split between these. All members of the group (including couples) maybe required to share a ger or room with other guests depending on the size and make up of the group. If you have opted for a single supplement it will not cover you for the night at the Gobi Oasis Homestay.
The majority of the camps used on this tour will have a shared western-style flush loo and shower facilities in separate blocks, however, some camps may have more basic toilet and shower facilities. All meals eaten at the ger camps are served in a central ger restaurant.

The tour starts from Ulaanbaatar's International Airport to coincide with the suggested group flights (see 'Getting There'). The plan for today is quite flexible, as the group flight arrival time will influence the schedule. Starting this morning, we’ll have an introductory meeting at the hotel. Rooms are available from 2pm, so we will check-in if possible, before a visit to the Gandan Monastery, the largest and most important in Mongolia. Wander around this fascinating site as you explore the different temples, including that of the Mijig Janraisig with its huge golden buddha statue. In the old temple complex we can listen to the chanting ceremonies which happen mid-morning. Then there may be time to visit the National History Museum which is a great introduction to the country's past. In the early evening, we enjoy a traditional music and dance performance by the Tumen Ekh Ensemble, followed by a welcome dinner.

This morning we head south to explore the rock formations Baga Gazriin Chuluu, including a visit to the Som Hoh Burd temple ruins. Later driving to Mandalgobi where we'll stay on the edge of this provincial town with our host Byamba and her husband Radnaa, who run the Gobi Oasis tree planting nursery. Byamba has been leading this conservation project for over 40 years. The project works by growing trees from small seeds and branches, and nurturing them in the harsh conditions, before replanting them in areas in desperate need of combating desertification. Here you will have the opportunity to contribute to the project by planting your own tree. Next we will have a Mongolian cooking lesson, preparing a traditional nomadic dishes - 'perhapsbuuz' (steamed dumplings) or 'huushur' (fried dumplings).

We will visit two famous caves that lie 7 kilometres to the east of the White Stupa. They are called Khevtee Bosoo Agui which in the local language means the 'lie and stand' caves. Aptly named as some parts of the caves are very small in which you need to crawl and other large enough to stand up in. We will also visit Del Uul to see the plethora of rock paintings found there.

There will be the opportunity to stop at the small museum and craft gers at the park entrance either before or after our visit to the gorge. In the afternoon there is the option to relax at camp or an opportunity to visit an organic farm in the nearby village of Bulgan and/or head to Moltsog Els sand dunes. Here we will have the opportunity to visit a local family of camel herders - step inside their ger and experience Mongolian hospitality with a cup of traditional tea, and no doubt some snuff and vodka. In the afternoon there is the option to either relax at camp or take a desert drive across the arid landscape to a local oasis of saxsaul trees - one of the native species of shrub-like trees which grow in these inhospitable conditions and whose root systems aid against desertification. As we drive, look out for herds of white-tailed gazelles and demoiselle or white-naped cranes. In the late afternoon, when the heat of the day has lessened, we can head to the sand dunes. Here we will visit a family of camel herders, experience local hospitality, and there will be an opportunity to saddle up for a Bactrian camel ride as well.

Founded in 1975 by Byamba, the project has been growing and nurturing trees in its nursery for over 40 years, in association with the Forest & Timber Industry Ministry, in a bid to combat desertification and protect native Gobi trees. In addition to helping combat CO2 emissions and reduce greenhouse gases, their work also provides wildlife habitats, reducing dust and wind, and supports the local workforce, decreasing urban migration. During your stay you can head out with the family to plant a tree and help with this worthwhile project. The homestay itself consists of two gers in the family yard, each has beds, a stove and warm water for washing. Meals are taken in the kitchen with the family and provide good, home cooked Mongolian food.

Responsible Travel
With local people, culture and eco-systems in mind, responsible travel and sustainable tourism are at the core of Wild Frontiers. We believe that a successful trip not only delivers a unique and unsurpassable journey for our travellers but also benefits the people and places we visit.
When designing our tours, we actively seek out experiences that have a positive impact on the communities and precious environments we visit - from supporting social enterprises; resting our heads in rural homestays; and eating at locally owned restaurants; to helping fund conservation projects that protect wildlife and their habitats.
Visit the Responsible Travel area of our website to read more, including the work of the Wild Frontiers Foundation through which we fundraise to aid community empowerment and education projects.
Reducing Single Use Plastic
We recognise the environmental issues and challenges around single-use plastic in many countries we visit and are actively working with our partners on the ground to reduce plastic waste on our tours and within the hotels and restaurants we visit. You can help to reduce your personal plastic waste by taking a refillable, filtered water bottle with you on your trip. Filtered water bottles can be refilled from water sources including your hotel room and restaurant taps, drinking fountains and refill stations. Every time you refill your bottle without the use of single-use plastic, you will be helping to reduce waste and protect the environment. Plant a tree at Gobi Oasis
Gobi Oasis is a small tree-planting nursery project established by Byamba Tseyen in her hometown of Mandalgobi. Byamba started the project in 1975 and for over 40 years, she has been promoting tree conservation by growing trees from small seeds and branches, nurturing them in the harsh conditions where she lives, before replanting them in areas in desperate need for defence against desertification. The project forms a small but vital role in the fight to protect the natural environment in Mongolia.

Key Information
CLIMATE
Although it boasts over 260 sunny days a year and is known as the "Land of the Blue Sky", Mongolia's climate is extreme with fierce summers and bitterly cold winters. Late May through to August is typically a good time for travelling with cooler temperatures and occasionally rain, which fills the rivers and brings fresh grass to the steppes. It is wise to be prepared for sunny days, possible rain and cool nights.
IS THIS TRIP FOR ME?
It may sound obvious but Wild Frontiers tours are not always for everyone and it is important to us that the tour you choose is the most suitable. All our tours have a fitness rating as a guideline but you should check the day-by-day itinerary carefully. In certain instances we may ask you to complete a travel questionnaire before confirming your booking in order to ensure your suitability. Should you have any concerns about your ability to partake in any aspect of the tour then please contact the office.
KEY ASPECTS TO CONSIDER
Anyone in a reasonable state of health, with an open mind and a sense of adventure should be perfectly able to cope with this tour, as all the walks are optional.
It is important to note that this tour includes some long drives on often bumpy, dirt roads. Please see the day-by-day itinerary for approximate driving times per day. On this tour we will use sturdy UAZ 4WD minibuses throughout.
Covering long distances is part of the Mongolian experience, and there will always be time for walks, photos and local encounters. Some of the areas visited are remote and see few foreign visitors so be prepared for the unexpected and be aware that changes to local conditions can dramatically affect envisaged timings and exact routings.
Due to the nature and remote locations visited on this tour, activities may change to occur either the day before or the day after what is outlined on the day-by-day itinerary. It is important to allow flexibility for the timings of activities.
Please be advised that on this trip vegetarians can be catered for but the selection and variety may be very limited, therefore we recommend packing a few extra bits to fill the gaps!
THE NATURE OF ADVENTURE TRAVEL
We feel that it’s worth pointing out that while we will always strive to stick as close to the stated itinerary as possible, it may be necessary from time to time to make changes to our itineraries or services (due to weather, political and religious influences etc.) and this can happen with little or no notice. This unpredictability can be one of the most exciting aspects of adventure travel and for many of our clients often leads to unexpected highlights as the tour-leader necessarily adapts the tour to the changing conditions. However we are aware that this lack of assuredness may not suit everyone. As such, with the greatest respect, if you are someone who needs to know that everything will happen exactly as planned, we would kindly suggest that perhaps our tours are not for you. Adventure travel can be infectious and once you’ve caught the bug, it is likely to never leave you, but especially if this is your first such tour we would strongly urge you to give us a call if you have any concerns whatsoever about your suitability for this trip.
TRAVELLING SOLO AND SINGLE SUPPLEMENTS
As a company approximately 70% of our clients are solo travellers, so it’s very unlikely you’ll be alone!
Our prices are typically based on twin-share accommodation but single supplements are not compulsory for any Wild Frontiers tour. If you prefer not to pay a single supplement we’ll pair you with someone else of the same sex for you to share with throughout the trip.
On this trip, if you do opt to pay for a single supplement then please note that it will cover you for all nights of the tour except at the Gobi Oasis Homestay.
Please note that paying a single supplement entitles you to lone occupancy of a single room. In many cases these rooms will be of the same size as a double/twin room, but in some cases they may be smaller.
INSURANCE
Insurance that provides cover for emergency repatriation in case of a medical emergency is compulsory for all tours. You should be aware that due to some of the geographical areas visited and some of the activities included on certain of our trips some standard insurance policies may not always provide adequate cover. As such we strongly recommend that you purchase a policy that adequately covers your trip. Please see the Insurance section for more details.
