An intriguing blend of the old and the new, Kyoto occupies a plateau that lies between the waters of Maizuru Bay and the peaks of the Tanba Mountains and its narrow backstreets still hide a wealth of ancient traditions, peaceful gardens and kimono clad Geishas. The city's historical value saw it escape the destruction meted out to other Japanese cities during World War II and its surviving treasures include Nijo Castle, the Kyoto Imperial Palace and the beautifully preserved historic district of Higashiyama.
