The pans are characterized by large flat expanses interspersed with rocky outcrops, as well as the Boteti River on the Western fringes of the pans which provides the area's wildlife with almost all of its water. The area is renowned for perhaps Botswana's most beloved creatures the meerkat, which can be found in their colonies throughout the area. During the rainy season the pans are transformed into a huge lake, which attracts large flocks of flamingos as well as a vast zebra migration.
