Day 1 ARRIVE DAR ES SALAAM
On arrival at Dar es Salaam's international airport you will be transferred the short distance by road to your overnight hotel. After a chance to settle in and freshen up, the afternoon and evening is then free to enjoy at your leisure.
Day 2 DAR ES SALAAM - RUAHA NATIONAL PARK
An early breakfast can be enjoyed by the pool this morning before you return to the airport in time to catch a light aircraft down to Ruaha National Park. Arriving later this morning, your guide will be waiting to transfer you to your camp deep in the heart of the Ruaha wilderness. After enjoying lunch in the dry riverbed in front of the camp, you will have some time to relax before an afternoon safari provides a first opportunity for some big game viewing.
Day 3 EXPLORE RUAHA NATIONAL PARK
The remote wilderness of Ruaha sees precious few visitors, making it an ideal spot to enjoy a walking safari. A superb way to explore the surrounding bush, it is an ideal opportunity to learn more about the fauna and flora that you might otherwise miss on a game drive. Travelling in the company of an armed guide, you will spend some three or four hours gaining fascinating insight into the traditional uses of the park's plants and trees and other cultural and historical developments.
Day 4 EXPLORE RUAHA NATIONAL PARK
Another full day in Ruaha provides the chance to enjoy some more game viewing, by vehicle or on foot. A rich haven for some of Tanzania's finest wildlife, Ruaha is home to large concentrations of big cats, with lions and leopards particularly prevalent. In between activities you will be able to relax back at camp, enjoying a delicious alfresco lunch as you gaze out across the open dusty plains.
Day 5 RUAHA NATIONAL PARK - PEMBA ISLAND
After a final breakfast in camp you will enjoy a last game drive en route back to the airstrip. Boarding a light aircraft, you will then fly on to Pemba Island, passing over the Zanzibar archipelago as you head out over the azure waters of the Indian Ocean. On arrival you will then be whisked off to your hotel by a combination of car and speedboat to enjoy the rest of your stay at a stunning beach lodge.
Day 6 ENJOY PEMBA ISLAND
Known as "The Green Island" in Arabic, Pemba is a largely undiscovered gem, providing the perfect backdrop to a gentle stroll along white sand beaches. Your first full day here provides an opportunity to explore something of the mangrove forest that surrounds the lodge, searching out some of the abundant wildlife that make their home here.
Day 7 ENJOY PEMBA ISLAND
The lodge is home to a fully licensed PADI Dive School, and today presents the chance for you to strap on fins and head out onto the reef to explore some of the finest dive sites anywhere on the East African coast.
Day 8 ENJOY PEMBA ISLAND
Blessed with a landscape of lush, green hills, fruit trees and spice plantations, Pemba once formed part of the Omani sultanate's rich trading empire. For those looking to discover a little more of the island's cultural history, today provides a chance to join a complimentary guided walk into the local villages to learn more about the way of life here and learn more about the traditions and customs of island life.
Day 9 ENJOY PEMBA ISLAND
Your time here is very much free to do as you please with the warm waters and white beaches always a tempting option for those looking to kick back and relax. Other options are available though, with river safaris on offer from the lodge and visits to the nearby Janbangome ruins always providing a popular way to spend a fascinating hour or so.
Day 10 ENJOY PEMBA ISLAND
For a real special treat, the hotel can book a private cruise on a traditional sailing dhow. You will sail out across the crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean, armed with a picnic lunch or afternoon snacks, to soak up the breathtaking views of Pemba.
Day 11 ENJOY PEMBA ISLAND
With one more day left to make the most of your trip, why not spend it savouring the idyllic surroundings and soaking up the last few hours of an African sun. Later, you can enjoy a romantic farewell dinner on the beach, listening to the waves lapping gently against the shoreline. A perfect end to an unforgettable journey.
Day 12 PEMBA ISLAND - DAR ES SALAAM
After a final breakfast on the beach this morning, you will be transferred back to Chake Chake Airport, by boat and car, in time to catch the flight back to Dar es Salaam where you will connect with your onward flight and your tour ends.
EXAMPLE ACCOMMODATION
Jongomero Camp, Ruaha National Park
Nestled beneath a grove of trees on the bank of the seasonal Great Ruaha River, Jongomero is one of Southern Tanzania’s most renowned safari camps. This is a true, wild African experience and makes for a wonderful stopping point on a circuit of Southern Tanzania. The camp blends seamlessly into its surroundings, with the eight wooden floored tents opening up at the front to offer a lovely view out to the river bed. Inside the tents are spacious and comfortable with small sitting areas both inside and outside, canvas-walled en-suite bathrooms and all of the amenities that one could wish for. The style of thatched roof above the tents helps to keep them cool in summer and warm in the cooler winter months. The main area of the lodge overlooks a meander of the river and consists of an indoor lounge and dining area as well as an open air wooden terrace which is a lovely spot to relax with a good book. The swimming pool is an ever popular spot to relax and soak up the sunshine in between safari activities.
Dar es Salaam Serena Hotel, Dar es Salaam
Despite being a large city hotel, at 230 rooms, there is lots of space at the hotel, so it rarely feels busy, and there are sufficient facilities providing an oasis of calm in the heart of bustling Dar es Salaam. The hotel has four restaurants, two bars, a jewellery shop and a small coffee shop, as well as a large executive lounge. Visitors will rarely spend more than a night in the capital and the Serena is a great choice for an overnight stay as it is clean, comfortable with modern facilities.
Fundu Lagoon, Pemba Island
The privately owned and relaxed Fundu Lagoon offers one of the best “barefoot luxury” beach experiences along Africa’s Indian Ocean Coast. The 18 tented rooms are either set on the hillside up in the jungle canopy or down on the beach. All of the rooms are safari-style, tented bungalows with en-suite bathrooms and mosquito net draped beds. Naturally the suites and superior suites are more spacious and luxurious with their own private decks and plunge pools. The main area of the lodge is a large thatched roof, open sided lapa, home to three bars and a superb seafood restaurant. As well as the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, guests can relax in the infinity pool and spa.

Positive Impact of this Trip
Making a Difference
Community Tourism
People and local communities have always been at the heart of Wild Frontiers and the travel experiences we offer. Through community tourism we have the opportunity to generate real positive impact, supporting people we visit through sustainable local development, and in turn help to alleviate poverty and protect culture and environments in often more vulnerable destinations. While doing so, our clients gain richer travel experiences and more meaningful connections with the people they meet.
Conservation and Climate Action
As a travel company, we hold a responsibility to minimise our environmental footprint and contribute to sustainability, and work closely with local communities to support their efforts. By implementing initiatives such as carbon measuring, tree-planting, reducing single-use plastic and promoting eco-friendly practices, we can help mitigate the negative impacts of tourism on fragile ecosystems and local communities. Additionally, prioritising conservation efforts helps preserve natural habitats and wildlife, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the wonders of our planet.
Wild Frontiers Foundation
The Wild Frontiers Foundation aims to provide a platform to create awareness, raise money and deliver funding to projects in countries where we operate as a travel company. Through the foundation, we are able to channel money into grass roots projects, which we have either established ourselves or support through charity partners. These include initiatives focused around education, the empowerment of local people and community conservation.
