Ecuador's capital city is considered one of the finest in Latin America and its setting, flanked by volcanic peaks, is simply breathtaking. Divided into the old and new towns, Quito offers a diverse mix of tradition and modernity, somehow managing to retain a wholly Ecuadorian flavour. The old town is a wonder, with blocks and blocks of colonial architecture, narrow streets and picturesque plazas. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, the old town suffered a major earthquake in 1987, which led to intensive repairs and restoration efforts, but it has managed to retain its charm and 'old world' feel. In contrast, the new town is a sprawling mass of modern shopping malls, multi-storey hotels and high-rise government buildings and offering an alternative and lively, vibrant face to modern-day Ecuador.

Journey to the middle of the earth
Mitad del Mundo, where the Incas celebrated the equatorial equinox, marks the exact ‘middle of the world’ at latitude 0º. Have fun spanning both hemispheres and exploring the scientific experiments that have been set up to show the polarity between them.![Shop at indigenous Otavalo market](/media/cache/driver/upload/mirror/dhruv-wildfrontierstravel-com/83921a27_LocalSouvenirSellerBanosdreamstimem43164806.jpeg)
Shop at indigenous Otavalo market
Pass stunning scenery of snow-capped volcanoes to reach one of South America’s most famous and biggest indigenous markets at Otavalo. Many indigenous communities trek here from around the area to sell their handcrafted goods and artisan wares.![Enjoy a cooking and chocolate class](/media/cache/driver/upload/mirror/dhruv-wildfrontierstravel-com/51c98908_CocoabeanColombiadreamstimel89432873.jpeg)
